What your trip will actually cost
Put in where you are going and see the fare broken down line by line, before you book rather than after the ride.
- Built on the published tariff
- Nothing added later
- Late night rate shown upfront
How a fare is put together
Three tariffs, straight from Safe Transport Victoria's own published maximum fares, not a figure we invented. Which one applies depends on when the trip starts. A flag fall is charged once, then either a rate per kilometre while the car is moving or a rate per minute while it is stopped or crawling in traffic, never both together.
| Tariff | Applies | Flag fall | Per km | Per min |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day rate | 9am to 5pm | $5.40 | $2.100 | $0.700 |
| Evening and overnight rate | 5pm to 9am | $6.75 | $2.300 | $0.800 |
| Weekend night and public holiday rate | Fri & Sat 10pm to 4am, public holidays | $8.00 | $2.550 | $0.850 |
Airport pickup
Only when you are collected from a terminal.
Toll
The real CityLink toll for your route, added only where it applies. A CBD run tolls at a few dollars, some routes carry none at all.
Minimum fare
The floor for very short trips.
Waiting time
If the car waits at your request beyond the trip itself. Not charged for our own delays.
What each car adds
A bigger or premium car adds a set amount on top of the distance fare.
| Car | Seats | Bags | Added to the fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan | 4 | 4 | Nothing |
| Silver Service | 4 | 4 | $11.00 |
| SUV or Wagon | 4 | 7 | $17.80 |
| Maxi Taxi | 11 | 8 | $17.80 |
The surcharge is added once per trip, not per kilometre, and it appears as its own line in the estimate before you book.

About fares
How are Melbourne taxi fares calculated?
A Melbourne taxi fare is a flag fall charged once, then either a rate per kilometre while the car is moving or a rate per minute while it is stopped or crawling in traffic, never both together. Which of the three tariffs applies, day, evening, or the Friday and Saturday night peak, depends on when the trip starts. The day rate is a flag fall of $5.40, $2.10 per kilometre or $0.70 per minute. Tolls, an airport pickup fee, a larger vehicle and any extras are added only when they actually apply, and each shows as its own line in the estimate.
Is the fare I see here the price I pay?
It is a close estimate rather than a locked quote. The distance and the rates are real, but traffic, an unusual route, waiting time at your request or a change of destination can move the final figure. Nothing is added that was not shown to you.
Is there a late night surcharge on Melbourne taxis?
Yes, though it is a different rate rather than a flat surcharge added on top. Evenings and overnight (5pm to 9am) charge a flag fall of $6.75, then $2.30 per kilometre or $0.80 per minute, and Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm to 4am, along with public holidays, charge $8.00, then $2.55 per kilometre or $0.85 per minute. It is included in the estimate you see before booking, so it is never a surprise on arrival.
Do I pay the airport toll and pickup fee?
The CityLink toll applies to airport runs and is included in the estimate. The airport pickup fee of $5.26 only applies when you are collected from a terminal, so a drop off at the airport does not carry it while a pickup does.
How can I pay for my taxi?
Cash, credit card, Cabcharge, MPTP or eTicket, paid to the driver in the car. There is nothing to pay when you book, no deposit and no account required. Corporate account customers are invoiced monthly instead.
Is a maxi taxi cheaper than booking two sedans?
For five or more passengers, usually yes. A maxi carries a surcharge over a sedan, but one maxi almost always costs less than two separate sedan fares for the same trip, and everyone arrives at the same time.
Happy with the price
Book it in about thirty seconds. Nothing to pay until you are in the car.
